Historic Hell’s Gate
The entrance to beautiful Macquarie Harbour, Hell’s Gate is so named because it marked the ‘entrance to Hell’ for convicts in the early 19th century. The treacherous seascape signified imminent arrival to the notorious Sarah Island, a penal colony known for it’s harsh conditions for guards and convicts alike.
Nowadays, Hell’s Gate is a much more leisurely affair, with boats passing through to make expeditions around the Harbour and the South West Wilderness area.
